Lissa Zukoff, Special Education Specialist

I am Lissa Zukoff, the Special Education Specialist for the NYS PTA. I live on Long Island with my husband and three sons. I became a member of the PTA when my oldest son started kindergarten.

He had been attending a center based preschool (center-based programs provide special education services to students in a classroom setting). The preschool best suited to my child’s needs was about 15 minutes away, which meant that neither of us had the opportunity to meet other families who attended our local elementary school.

I was anxious about so many things, and felt very isolated. At the transition meeting from the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) to the Committee on Special Education (CSE), the chairperson recommended I join the district’s SEPTA, I am so glad I took her advice!

Southeastern Region Highlight
Velida (Val) Ford, Southeastern Region Membership Chair (RMC)
This is my first year serving as the RMC for the Southeastern Region. My PTA journey began with seven years of service at my grandson’s local PTA. I have held both the Secretary and President officer positions. Currently, I am the Scholastic Book Fair Chair. These volunteer opportunities allowed me to work with the school community, which I enjoy.

As RMC, I hope to encourage and help units reach their goals in providing the information they need to keep current with various NYS PTA membership campaigns.

With relearning how to PTA with the pandemic, I am extremely proud of the wonderful accomplishments that the Southeastern Region has achieved. The region has had 6 units surpass their membership goals for the year and many more who achieved membership awards. The Southeastern Region is also in the process of completing the chartering of a new unit.

New to the region is the Youth Council, a group of youth members representing their respective PTA units who inform their peers on all things PTA.

I would personally recommend unit leaders consider getting involved with their respective regions. I have found it both enlightening and highly informative.
